The Maintenance Project

To that end, it has embarked on a major maintenance project in Makkah. The initiative is spearheaded by IHF President Dr. Jaleel Abdulaziz and IHF Executive Director Usama Abd Al-Qader, with the generous support of King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud and Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The project will entail the restoration, conservation and display of approximately 630 precious objects from the al-Majal collection, which are housed at the IHF’s premises in Mecca. This massive undertaking is unprecedented in scope and significance, and it represents a monumental commitment by the IHF to ensure that this important heritage remains accessible for generations to come.

The conservation team comprises some of Saudi Arabia’s leading experts in their respective fields, including representatives from government ministries and agencies, museum directors from other Arab countries, as well as international specialists. The Team

Construction of the Majal al-Arab project started in 2009 and was completed in 2015. The project was funded by the Saudi Crown Prince and chaired by Prince Nawaf bin Abdulaziz. The aim of the project is to provide a sustainable sewage treatment plant for Makkah City.

A team of over 6,000 workers from more than 50 countries worked on the Majal al-Arab project. Many of these workers came from regions with large Hajj populations, such as Indonesia and Malaysia, which helped to keep costs down.

The plant is based on an Israeli design and features a hybrid treatment system that uses both conventional and advanced technologies. The plant is able to treat up to 160,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, which is enough to handle the city’s current sewage needs.
